Why Your Conditioner May Be Weighing Your Hair Down
Flat hair usually gets blamed on the shampoo. More often it is the conditioner, and specifically where it is being applied.
Conditioner has a job, and a place
Conditioner smooths the hair shaft. The shaft is the part that needs it, particularly at the ends, which are the oldest and most worn. The scalp is skin and produces its own oil, so it rarely needs help.
Applied at the root, conditioner adds weight exactly where you want lift, and on an oily scalp it compounds oil that is already there.
The rule
- Oily scalp mid length to ends only
- Balanced scalp mid length to ends, root only if the ends feel rough
- Dry scalp ends first, then a light pass at the root
- Combination by zone, avoiding the oilier areas
Buildup is cumulative
Silicones and heavy conditioning agents can deposit faster than normal washing removes them. Weeks of that produces hair that feels coated, looks dull, and goes flat quickly regardless of how recently it was washed.
If your hair feels heavy on wash day, buildup is the more likely explanation than a sudden change in your hair.
Testing for buildup
- Wash normally and let hair dry with no product
- Take a clean strand between your fingers and slide down it
- A slick, coated feel points to buildup
- Clarify once and repeat the check
- If it feels noticeably different, buildup was the issue
What to change
Move the application point before changing the product. Most people find that alone is enough. If it is not, clarify to reset, then reintroduce conditioner further down the shaft than before.
Do not clarify weekly. It strips more than buildup and can push an oily scalp into rebound production.
